Manchester United news: Alexis Sanchez, Paul Pogba and other players to take pay cut for failing to qualify for Champions League

Manchester United’s players will take 25 per cent pay cuts because of their failure to qualify for the Champions League.

The 20-time English champions’ 1-1 draw at Huddersfield killed off any hope of finishing in the top four, as Chelsea and Tottenham – barring some extraordinary turn of events – will take third and fourth place.

Alexis Sanchez is Man United’s best paid player and is said to earn around £500,000-a-week

Alexis Sanchez is Man United’s best paid player and is said to earn around £500,000-a-week

How many of the current first team will still be there next season remains to be seen.

Alexis Sanchez, who earns a reported £500,000-a-week, is understood to be one player the club want rid of and it has even been claimed United are willing to pay half of his wages to get him off their books.

“I can’t talk about individuals now but there’s a chance you’ve seen the last of [some] players,” manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said. “We weren’t good enough . . . the table seldom lies.

“Effort and attitude was not the problem. The players were running and trying. We just weren’t good enough. That is the problem.”

Arsenal can still join the other English sides in next season’s competition if they win the Europa League.

For United, however, this is the fourth time since Sir Alex Ferguson retired as manager of the club in 2013 that they have failed to finish in the top four.

And it could get even worse for the club. Currently, United are sixth and one point behind Arsenal with a home game against Cardiff City to play.

If they finish sixth and Watford beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final on 18 May, they will have to go through three rounds of Europa League qualifying to reach the group stage. The first of those three matches is on 25 July when United are due to face Spurs in a friendly in Shanghai.

Arsene Wenger EXCLUSIVE: All-English European cup finals due to ‘ageing squads’ of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern Munich

Arsene Wenger believes the ‘collapse of the traditionally strong European teams’ is behind England’s domination of the Champions League and Europa League this season.

Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea have made history this year by taking all four final places in Europe’s two major competitions.

It is the first time all four finalists in the Champions League and Europa League have come from one nation.

Liverpool are through to the Champions League final for the second season running

It’s been perhaps the most thrilling season of European competition ever.

Liverpool and Tottenham have both staged miracle comebacks to reach the European Cup final in Madrid, with the Reds beating Barcelona in the semis and Spurs beating Ajax.

Ajax, meanwhile, had previously knocked out both Juventus and Real Madrid before losing to Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Chelsea and Arsenal’s places in the final have been less surprising. They were two of the strongest teams in the competition, after all, but they have been made to work hard for their final spots.

And Wenger believes he knows the secret behind the English clubs’ success – their rivals are not as strong as they once were.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT’s Sam Matterface, the legendary Arsenal boss said: “First of all I believe in England people work well.

“Secondly it’s a consequence of dominant financial power of the English clubs and basically, as well, the collapse of traditionally strong European teams.

“When I say collapse, it’s Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus – why? Because the players who made the difference in all these clubs have aged, and are not in the position anymore to make that difference.

“The dominant players at Bayern Munich were Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben and today they don’t have the physical potential to do it.

Robben and Ribery have been at Bayern Munich for 10 years and 12 years, respectively, winning numerous titles

Robben and Ribery have been at Bayern Munich for 10 years and 12 years, respectively, winning numerous titles

“It’s the same at Barcelona, who have lost players like Xavi and Inesta, Real Madrid have lost Ronaldo, at Juventus Giorgio Chiellini is aging and Gigi Buffon is not there anymore.

“So it’s the simultaneous strength of England and the collapse of the other big dominant forces before, who will now be on the market.

“What I can promise you, is that we will have a very interesting transfer period, an interesting battle, this summer.”

It’s been a year since Wenger ended his 22-year spell in charge of Arsenal and, having yet to return to the game, his future plans have dominated the headlines in recent weeks.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he vowed to return to football ‘soon’ but was coy in what capacity.

The veteran Frenchman, who insists he still has the desire to compete, has been linked with jobs in management and at boardroom level across Europe, including French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

“I am a competitor first, I live for competition and I will be back in football soon,” Wenger added.

“That’s a promise.

“In what way, I don’t know, but I will be back.”

Football: Noh Rahman embracing learning curve as Home United interim coach

SINGAPORE - Former national football stalwart Noh Rahman got his Singapore Premier League (SPL) coaching career off to the best possible start on Wednesday (April 24), after he guided Home United to a polished 3-0 win over Geylang International.
But the 38-year-old, who took over the reins of the Protectors on an interim basis from Saswadimata Dasuki last Friday, said he hasn't had much time to bask in the maiden victory.
With a wry smile, Noh told The Straits Times on Friday (April 26): "Being a player and a coach are two very different things. As a player, you just have to focus on what you eat, how you train, and to give your best in games.
"As a coach, the minute one game ends, you're already thinking about the next game."
Noh is expecting a tougher challenge on Saturday against 2018 champions Albirex Niigata at the Jurong East Stadium.
The Japanese team went undefeated last term en route to a third straight league championship, but a new league rule has meant that for this term, Albirex have to sign at least four Singaporean players, with at least two starting and playing the entire first half.
Albirex are smarting after a 4-2 defeat by Hougang United on Wednesday - their second loss of the season - and are currently fourth in the SPL after seven games with 11 points, one ahead of Home.
Said Noh: "It's a 5.30pm kickoff, on a hard (artificial) ground, and it could be hot. We are expecting a tough game."

During a 20-year playing career which he called time on at the end of 2016, Noh earned 79 international caps as well as a reputation as being one of the most professional local footballers.
Widely respected by his peers, he won two S.League (SPL's predecessor) titles (2001, 2002), two Singapore Cups (2012, 2013) and two AFF Suzuki Cups (2004, 2007).
The former defender told ST that one of the first things he did after being appointed Home's interim coach, was to consult a group of six senior players.
"It was quite a lengthy meeting where we shared quite a lot of things, and I appreciate the players being honest," said the rookie coach.
Veteran fullback Juma'at Jantan, 35, was one of the players involved in the meeting.
Said Juma'at: "In football, one of the most important things is communication. If we have that, things will fall in place.
"Noh is a no-nonsense type on and off the field, and the players - even myself now - look up to him. And he is open (to feedback) as well, so I think he is the best choice to lead the team for now."
Juma'at is one of four players in the current Home squad - the others are Izzdin Shafiq, Abdil Qaiyyim and South Korean midfielder Song Ui-Yong - who were teammates with Noh when he played for the Protectors from 2013 to 2015.
When asked if he felt weird coaching players he once shared a pitch and changing room with, Noh said: "Yes, a little bit!
"But these players are great, they know where the line between a coach and the players is. And I appreciate the fact they understand their roles in the team well."
Protectors youngster Adam Swandi recalled that Noh was one of the established senior national players when he received his first Lions call-up in 2013.
The 23-year-old, who scored against Geylang on Wednesday, said: "Coach Noh has a lot of experience, and he is a role model for players like me.
"He has so much to offer our team and Singapore football, and I think him being in charge of the team now is a good thing."
Noh said he has been told by the club it would appoint the new head coach within six weeks, and is looking forward to returning his role at the start of the season, which he said was "to assist and learn".
"I'm not shy in saying I feel I am not ready for a head coach job like this," said Noh. "But it's a challenge I am ready to take on."

“Obviously I have a season to finish off with Dortmund but I’m definitely looking forward to being here.

“It’s going to be an amazing experience, one I can’t wait for, and to be here in England, speaking English again and meeting all the guys is something I’m thrilled for.

Manchester United transfer target Joao Felix isn’t showing any signs of complacency as his breakthrough season continues.

Joao Felix strikes the ball against Vitoria de Setubal

The interest in Felix has ramped up over the last few days following his hat-trick in the Europa League quarter-finals against Eintracht Frankfurt, where he became the youngest ever to perform the feat.

And on Sunday the masterful 19-year-old thrilled those at the Estadio da Luz, including plenty of scouts, as he made two assists and then scored a brilliant third to help the Portuguese giants to a 4-2 victory over Vitoria de Setubal in the Primeira Division.

And he celebrated his own strike in style two, first of all giving us his version of Kylian Mbappe’s crossed arms before then embracing his 16-year-old brother Hugo – part of the Benfica academy, who happened to be standing behind the goal he scored, performing ball boy duties.

You can see the clip below.

Man United are one of a host of top European sides keen on Felix, with Juventus also interested, while Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly scouting the player heavily.

He would, though, cost any club a sizeable sum thanks to his €120million release clause, which Benfica wish to increase.

Football: United late show rescues draw against Burnley

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's winning start as Manchester United's caretaker manager ended with a 2-2 draw at home to Burnley on Tuesday (Jan 29), but his side avoided defeat in spirited fashion with two late goals.
Goals from Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood had given Burnley a 2-0 lead before a late rally from United with a penalty from Paul Pogba in the 87th minute and a stoppage-time goal from Victor Lindelof saved their blushes.
Solskjaer had won his opening six Premier League games after replacing Jose Mourinho in December and the result means United missed out on a chance to go level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.
Burnley, who are now unbeaten in five and move up to 15th, went ahead in the 51st minute when Ashley Barnes blasted home after being put through by Jack Cork.
The Clarets doubled their lead in the 81st minute when Chris Wood headed in a cross from Ashley Westwood at the back post.
But United got a foothold when Jesse Lingard was pulled down by Jeff Hendrick and Pogba drove home the penalty.
In the second minute of stoppage time Burnley keeper Tom Heaton parried an Alexis Sanchez header but Lindelof reacted well to fire in the equaliser.

Aberdeen 0-3 Celtic: Hoops wrap up eighth successive Scottish Premiership title with routine win

Aberdeen 0-3 Celtic: Hoops wrap up eighth successive Scottish Premiership title with routine win

Celtic have confirmed their status as Scottish Premiership champions for an eighth season in a row with a 3-0 triumph at Aberdeen.

Mikael Lustig scored with a diving header five minutes from half-time before James Wilson missed two glorious chances for the Dons.

Parkhead defender Jozo Simunovic headed in the second from a Callum McGregor corner in the 52nd minute before French striker Odsonne Edouard fired in a late third to wrap up the championship with two fixtures remaining.

The win took Celtic 12 points ahead of Rangers who cannot catch them in their last three games.

The champions face Hearts in the William Hill Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park on May 25 where victory will hand them an unprecedented domestic triple treble and with momentum behind them, who outside Tynecastle would bet against it?

Interim boss Neil Lennon’s side travelled north knowing a point would suffice and he reinstated left-back Kieran Tierney, who will have an operation on a double hernia at the end of the season, and attacker Timothy Weah with Emilio Izaguirre out altogether and Scott Sinclair on the bench.

The Dons were without suspended defender Andrew Considine as well as injured captain Graeme Shinnie, Gary Mackay-Steven, Connor McLellan and Niall McGinn but right-back Shay Logan returned after being injured out since February 10.

Before the game there was a minute’s applause in tribute to former Celtic captain and manager Billy McNeill and fellow Lisbon Lion Stevie Chalmers who died recently, the former also an ex-Aberdeen boss.

Dons keeper Joe Lewis saved an early header from Celtic midfielder Tom Rogic but in the 18th minute the home side should have taken the lead when Greg Stewart teed up Wilson with a cross but from 10 yards the striker, on loan from Manchester United, volleyed into the ground and the ball clipped the bar on the way over.

A long ball from Hoops defender Kristoffer Ajer found Edouard racing through on goal chased by Logan but Lewis blocked the shot.

At the other end, after a remarkable lung-bursting run and cross from Aberdeen skipper Scott McKenna, Celtic keeper Scott Bain blocked Sam Cosgrove’s shot before Wilson hit the outside of the post with the rebound with the goal gaping.

However, in the 40th minute when Stevie May switched off, Lustig sneaked in behind him at the back post to head in an inviting McGregor cross for his second goal of the season.

Wilson missed another half-chance at the start of the second-half when he failed to connect properly with a May cross, his volley floating over the bar.

Moments later when, after Lewis had foiled Edouard to concede another corner, Simunovic leapt to bullet in McGregor’s delivery, his second goal of the campaign after scoring the only goal of the game last week against Kilmarnock. That was the league title effectively won.

Bain did make a save from Aberdeen defender Michael Devlin’s close-range effort with five minutes remaining before Edouard, following a Hoops break, took a Rogic pass and drilled a shot low past Lewis for a fine third goal.
