Every Premier League club’s backup strikers rated – from worst to best

Breaking into your team’s starting XI is a challenge that every player will face at one point or another in their career no matter how good they are.

It could be said that task is even harder if you are a striker. Playing second fiddle to a in-form forward can be exceptionally frustrating, especially when they are banging in goals and the manager is unwilling to gamble by changing football’s glamour position.

Fernando Llorente scored the crucial goal to send Spurs through

Fernando Llorente scored the crucial goal to send Spurs through

In midweek, Fernando Llorente, in for the injured Harry Kane, came up with the goods, when his bundled effort helped Tottenham progress past Manchester City and into the Champions League semi-final.

Against Porto, Divock Origi started his first Champions League game in three years in place of Roberto Firmino and impressed with his pace and movement.

So who is your club’s back up striker and do they have a chance of getting an extended run in the team?

20. Huddersfield – Steve Mounie

If you though Fulham had a bad season, the Terriers have been even worse. Bottom of the table, their tally of 14 points is one of the worst in the league’s history and it has not been helped with their lack of goals.

Mounie who started last season so well with a brace on his debut, has only scored twice all season and Karlan Grant has already got three for the club and he signed in January, which sums the problem up.

Steve Mounie has scored just twice this season

19. Fulham – Floyd Ayite

It has been a woeful season for Fulham and they have been sent back down to the Championship at the first time of asking. Aleksander Mitrovic was doing well for a period but his 10 Premier League goals have not been enough, while Ryan Babel has been brought in on loan, Ayite has only played 12 times this season, scoring just once and is hardly the man you turn to when the going gets tough.

The Fulham striker has netted only once

21

18. Burnley – Matej Vydra

Prolific in the Championship, Vydra has yet to enjoy quite the same success in the top flight. Failed to find the net during his time with Watford in the Premier League and has scored just once in 11 games for Sean Dyche’s side.

Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood are the main strikers at Turf Moor and Vydra will have to do much more to change that.

Vydra has struggled in the Premier League

21

17. Newcastle – Joselu

The impact of Salomon Rondon has been huge since he joined on loan from West Brom and has meant Joselu has found himself on the fringes of the first-team under Rafael Benitez.

In his 16 matches he has played this season, 11 have come from the bench and he has only scored twice.

Joselu has hardly been prolific with just two goals

16. Cardiff – Kenneth Zohore

The Dane has scored just once in 16 matches for the Bluebirds and has had to settle for a place on the bench this season behind the likes of Oumar Niasse and Bobby Reid, as the club battle to avoid relegation.

Zohore has played 16 times this season

21

15. Southampton – Charlie Austin

The former QPR man is a natural finisher and some will argue he is a better striker than Shane Long, but it is the latter who has been in the Saints side in recent weeks as their revival continues. Austin has netted only twice and has played 23 times, 12 of those as a substitute.

14. Brighton – Florin Andone

Chris Hughton has rotated with a number of his strikers this season, choosing between Glenn Murray, Jurgen Locadia and Andone, with the latter receiving the least minutes of the forwards.

The Romanian has three Premier League goals this season, but has been unable to help prevent the Seagulls from slumping dangerously close to the relegation zone.

13. AFC Bournemouth – Dominic Solanke

The striker joined the Cherries from Liverpool for £17m in January, hoping to get more first-team action then he had at Anfield. However, he has started just twice in eight appearances and has yet to find the net.

Still only 21, Solanke still has plenty of time to make an impact, but for now he still has some way to go to get ahead of Callum Wilson and Joshua King.

12. West Ham – Lucas Perez

Marko Arnautovic and Chicharito have been preferred up top for the Hammers and Perez has only started eight times scoring twice and has yet to convince he is capable of leading the line in the Premier League.

Perez has struggled in the Premier League

11. Crystal Palace – Christian Benteke

In his debut season for the club in 2016/17, Benteke scored 17 times. Since then, the former Aston Villa man has netted just three times and is well and truly down the pecking order behind Wilfried Zaha and Michy Batshuayi.

Confidence and a lack of form have played a part in his struggles and it remains to be seen if he will recapture his prowess in front of goal.

Christian Benteke has had another difficult season

10. Everton – Cenk Tosun

Having begun the season as Marco Silva’s first choice striker, the Turkish international has fallen down the pecking order and is unable to gain any consistency as a result.

The improved form of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison mean Tosun has barely had a look in. He has only scored eight times since his January 2018 move and has been linked with a move to Fiorentina.

Cenk Tosun’s form and confidence have dipped

21

9. Leicester City – Kelechi Iheanacho

Iheanacho has been used mainly to cover for Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki and has scored just four times in the league in two seasons, the same amount he managed in his final campaign with Manchester City.

Once tipped to push on and become a striking sensation, the last couple of years have been majorly disappointing for the talented 22-year-old.

Iheanacho has been unable to make good on his early promise

21

8. Arsenal – Danny Welbeck

Injuries have hampered Welbeck’s time with Arsenal and he is currently working his way back to full fitness following an broken ankle in November. However, had he been fit, it is very likely he would have played a support role to first choice duo Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, who themselves are battling to be the Gunners main striker.

Welbeck has hardly ever been prolific throughout his career and the most Premier League goals the most he has ever scored for Arsenal is five. Has also been linked with a summer move to Rangers.

7. Wolves – Ivan Cavaleiro

The season’s surprise package, few expected Wolves to be eighth in the league and to have been on the verge of the FA Cup final. Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota are the first-choice strikers for Wolves and Cavaleiro has been introduced late on in matches to change the dynamic to good effect, scoring three times.

6. Liverpool – Divock Origi

The Belgian has never been considered a player to start for Liverpool, but he has proved he is capable of making an impact when he comes on or is given a rare chance.

The unenviable task of trying to dislodge Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane is what faces Origi, but he did impress in his start against Porto and did net a vital last minute winner in the Merseyside derby against Everton to guarantee his hero status on the red side.

5. Watford – Andre Gray

With Troy Deeney suspended, Gray will likely lead the line for the remainder of the season. He has made 14 appearances as a substitute this season, but has looked sharp when called upon, coming off the bench to score winners against Everton and Leicester, giving him a total of five for campaign.

4. Manchester City – Gabriel Jesus

Pep Guardiola’s side are enjoying another dominating season as they battle it out with Liverpool for the title.

While Jesus has found the target seven times this season, opportunities to start have been harder to come by and he has not managed to consistently stake a place ahead of Sergio Aguero, who is one of the Premier League’s greatest ever goal scorers.

21

3. Tottenham – Fernando Llorente

Kane has been ruled out twice this season and both times Spurs have looked to Llorente to fill the void.

The Spaniard may not be prolific like the England striker, but he contributes in his own way, allowing those around him to flourish through his ability to link play and hold the ball up.

While he may only have scored once in the league, Llorente was in the right place to send Spurs into the Champions League semi-final for the first time in their history.

Llorente has been effective when called upon

2. Chelsea – Olivier Giroud

The Frenchman has shone in the Europa League, but has been used sparingly in the Premier League this season and does not seem to be trusted to start key games by Maurizio Sarri, despite his understanding with Eden Hazard and the ability to give the Blues a different outlet.

Gonzalo Higuain was brought in on loan, but has since failed to convince, scoring only against already-relegated Fulham and Huddersfield.

1. Manchester United – Romelu Lukaku

While he has not be a permanent fixture on the bench, Lukaku has had to rotate with Marcus Rashford often this season, but has still managed a more than respectable 12 goals in 29 appearances. Despite being ridiculed for his first touch and sometimes clumsy style, Lukaku still has an incredible 113 goals in the Premier League at the age of 25.

Chelsea team news: How the Blues could line-up for Europa League final against Arsenal with N’Golo Kante a serious doubt

Chelsea take on Arsenal on Wednesday night in the all English Europa League final in Baku – live on talkSPORT.

Maurizio Sarri has some big selection choices to make ahead of the match and has to cope with injury problems.

Maurizio Sarri has decisions to make with his Chelsea line-up

It could also be his last match in charge of the club with speculation linking him to the Juventus job, while some media outlets are reporting he already has an agreement in place.

Their preparations for the match have been fraught with Sarri storming out of their training session the day before the final throwing and kicking his own baseball cap.

It seemed to have been sparked after an altercation between David Luiz and Gonzalo Higuain.

Here at talkSPORT.com we have taken a look at how the Blues could line-up for the game.

How Chelsea could line-up against Arsenal for the Europa League final

The defence is unlikely to change from the last few weeks of the season, mainly because Sarri doesn’t have many other options.

His best two fit central defenders are David Luiz and Andreas Christensen with Antonio Rudiger out injured and Gary Cahill out of favour.

At full-back, Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta have been first choice all season and, arguably, are the most reliable part of the team.

The midfield and attack is where things get a little more stretched for the manager.

N’Golo Kante is struggling with a knee injury and is said to be 50/50. He might be on the bench but it remains to be seen if he will be risked starting the match.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek picked up a serious ankle injury in Chelsea’s post-season charity friendly in America and is out for at least a year.

Sarri will have little option but to play Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley in midfield if he wants to stick with his favoured formation.

Eden Hazard looks set to play his last game in a Chelsea shirt before a summer transfer to Real Madrid.

Eden Hazard could be set for his final game in a Chelsea shirt

Pedro has been favoured by the manager in recent weeks over Willian while Callum Hudson-Odoi remains sidelined with a long-term ankle injury.

In attack, Gonzalo Higuain has been underwhelming during his loan spell and is unlikely to start.

Olivier Giroud has been the much better option and with his contract extension signed recently he may be shown faith by the manager.

Can this team help Chelsea claim a second Europa League trophy this decade?

I believe in The Lions: Yoshida

I believe in The Lions: Yoshida

He speaks halting English, but Tatsuma Yoshida's ambition is clear.
The new national coach wants to restore Singapore's position as South-east Asia's top side with an attacking brand of football.
The Lions failed to reach the semi-finals of the last three AFF Suzuki Cups and trail Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Myanmar and Indonesia in the world rankings.
Despite having a translator in the form of Albirex Niigata Under-15s coach Ryo Ishibashi, Yoshida made a conscious effort to field questions on his own in English during his unveiling at the Jalan Besar Stadium yesterday.
He told The Straits Times: "The shorter-term target is the World Cup qualifiers, which I hope we can surprise (a few teams).
"The longer-term target, we want to be top of Asean. Currently, we are in the middle. Step by step, we will get there."
The 44-year-old is the first Japanese, and the youngest coach in this millennium, to lead Singapore.

He has been appointed on a two-year deal and replaces V. Sundram Moorthy, who was the last permanent Singapore coach before he vacated the post in April last year.
Since then, former national captains Fandi Ahmad and Nazri Nasir have both served on an interim and caretaker basis.
Yoshida's first assignments will be the upcoming international home friendlies against Solomon Islands (June 8) and Myanmar (June 11). The Lions will then await the World Cup qualifiers draw in July, with the games to commence from September.
He said: "I am honoured to be appointed Singapore's national team coach and thankful for the trust that FAS has placed in me. This position bears heavy responsibilities which I will undertake with commitment and pride.
"While I am aware that this is no easy task, I believe in the potential that Singapore football has to reach greater heights and success on the international stage and look forward to embarking on this journey with the players and fans.
"Teamwork is crucial in order for us to succeed, which is why I am pleased to have local legends like (national Under-22 coach) Fandi and Nazri (assistant national coach) on board this journey.
"The synergy in my partnership with Fandi will be of utmost importance as the Under-22 team are critical to the long-term objectives of the national team."
The former Kashiwa Reysol, Albirex Niigata and Ventforet Kofu coach told ST that he had watched Singapore play in last year's AFF Suzuki Cup and liked the team's organisation and defence.
The former Jurong FC midfielder said: "The pressing was good, but we want to go to the next step.
"It is important to make good use of possession and I want to improve the team's attack, build-up play, and penetration into the box to get the goals. I believe in the Lions, myself, my staff, and FAS... We are one. I believe in my abilities and knowledge."
The FAS earlier this month appointed 53-year-old Australian Joseph Palatsides as its new technical director after Belgian Michel Sablon stepped down last December.
FAS president Lim Kia Tong explained Yoshida was recommended by Japan FA's technical department and his youth development expertise - he had produced national players like Marseille defender Hiroki Sakai - matched what the FAS was looking for.
Stressing the FAS' expectations of improving on their current world No. 160 ranking, Lim added: "He brings with him the exemplary attitude, strict discipline and hard work that the Japanese are known for.
"We are convinced he will be able to bring about the high-intensity, fast-moving football style that we and the fans are looking for."
Lions skipper Hariss Harun is looking forward to working with the new coach, and urged all stakeholders to get on the same page.
The 28-year-old midfielder said: "It is normal for people to question his credentials, but it is also possible we can achieve success with him. It is not just up to him, but down to the whole system to help Singapore football achieve what we want.
"We can see his excitement and energy. His English may be limited but, so far, we have no problem understanding him. Ultimately, the players need to work hard to get the job done."

Exauce Mpembele scored 35 goals for Lille’s youth teams

His tally of 35 goals for Lille’s Under-17s and Under-19s in 2018/19 has certainly not gone unnoticed.

DH in Belgium report that a host of clubs are ‘keeping an eye’ on the young forward, with both Manchester United and Manchester City among the interested parties.

Also mentioned in the report are Atletico Madrid, AC Milan and Red Bull Salzburg.

The teenager is capable of playing on either wing as well as through the middle.

Mpembele certainly has an eye for goal as the video below posted on Twitter shows. It also says the prolific forward netted 16 times in just 11 games for Lille’s Under-17s.

It is understandable that Lille are thought to be trying to get him to sign his first professional contract so they do not lose the highly-rated player.

The DH report suggests that nothing has been done yet and he will ‘explore all the avenues’ before deciding where his future lies.
