Real Madrid should be banned from competing in next year’s Champions League owing to the fact they don’t have a women’s team, according to talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham.
The 13-time Champions League winners are far behind some of the top European clubs in terms of the women’s game.
Back in December club president Florentino Perez spoke proudly about how eSports will be a big part of the club’s future, as well as the prospect of a Real Madrid theme park being built in the Spanish capital.
But when pressed at the recent AGM about the prospect of creating women’s team he simply didn’t respond, with club officials later commenting it wasn’t a priority for them at this time.
And speaking on Drivetime, Durham expressed his disgust at that decision – insisting that the Spanish giants should be heavily penalised for their actions.
“The Spanish capital hosted Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona at the weekend, and over 60,000 fans were in attendance,” he explained.
“That tells you how serious the women’s game is starting to be taken over there.
“Despite that Real Madrid, one of the biggest clubs in world football, continue to ignore the women’s game.
“Every club in the Premier League has a women’s team, so why don’t they?!
“The solution is to ban Real Madrid from the Champions League next season.
“That’s the only way this will get the powers that be at that football club to focus their minds on what’s important.”

He continued: “They’re very keen on things like eSports and getting plans in place for a theme park, but a women’s team isn’t a priority?
“Tell me how you work that one out. They’ve had proposals from various individuals and they’ve completely ignored them.
“The fact the club president didn’t even respond to being asked to the prospect of it happening says it all.
“For Real Madrid not to have a women’s team is totally unacceptable.”
