Tottenham 1-0 Manchester City: Pep Guardiola insists his side ‘controlled the game’ despite Champions League defeat

Pep Guardiola believes his side were the dominant team throughout their Champions League quarter-final first leg clash with Tottenham – despite Manchester City LOSING the match.

Heung-min Son’s second-half goal decided Tuesday evening’s clash and puts Spurs in the driving seat ahead of next week’s return fixture at the Etihad.

Son did remarkably well to keep the ball in play, before cutting back into the area and firing past Ederson

The north Londoners were good value for their victory, with City restricted to only one clear chance – a penalty, awarded after a VAR review, which Hugo Lloris saved from Sergio Aguero.

Spurs tested Ederson more frequently and appeared to have their opponents rattled throughout much of the match, even though City ended the clash with more possession than the hosts.

And Guardiola claims his side, who were remarkably poor by their usual elite standards, actually had supremacy in the match.

He said: “Except for a few chances we conceded on set-pieces and counter-attacks we controlled the game.

“We will see if we are going to change it a bit but, with our people, with our fans, our families, we will see.

“If we are not able to arrive in the last stages it is because it is a challenge. The situation is what it is.

A one-goal advantage is by no means an emphatic lead for Spurs heading into the second leg, and Guardiola admitted it may actually do his side good to have lost the initial encounter.

He added: “With 0-0 you have to (think about whether to) ‘attack?’ ‘defend?’. Now we know what we have to do.”

Football: Son's late winner gives Tottenham edge over Man City in Champions League quarter-final first leg

LONDON (REUTERS) - Son Heung-min once again proved there is more to Tottenham Hotspur than Harry Kane as the South Korean's late goal sealed a 1-0 home win over Manchester City in an absorbing Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday (April 9).
With Spurs talisman Kane having hobbled off injured and favourites City beginning to turn the screw, Son sent the home fans inside the London club's majestic new stadium into delirium as he fired past Ederson in the 78th minute.
It gave Tottenham a slender but precious advantage to take to City's Etihad Stadium next week when they will attempt to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time.
Quadruple-chasing City were not at their best as Spurs chased and harried Pep Guardiola's side for 90 minutes and they will rue Sergio Aguero's first-half penalty miss.
The Argentine was handed the chance to put City ahead when Danny Rose was adjudged by VAR to have handled, but his 13th minute spot kick was brilliantly saved by Hugo Lloris.
The French keeper's heroics produced a deafening roar not heard along the Tottenham High Road since Spurs moved out of their old stadium two years ago, but it was nothing compared to the sounds that greeted Son's 78th minute winner.
"As a team we never give up, we fight until 90 minutes. I think we deserved to win, we were more clinical than them," said Son, who last week scored the first Premier League goal in the 62,000-seat arena, and now owns the first European strike there.
"I like this stadium, it is amazing to play here, I am grateful for the opportunity to play at this stadium."

Tottenham fans in the 17,500 capacity South Stand displayed placards before kickoff spelling out the club's motto "To Dare Is To Do" - and their team obliged, going toe-to-toe with a side who had won 21 of their last 23 games in all competitions.

SUPERB STOP

Dele Alli volleyed Moussa Sissoko's cross over early on but Tottenham were then stopped in their tracks.
Raheem Sterling cut in and fired goalwards and Rose, diving to block, was penalised for handball, courtesy of VAR, despite no City players even appealing for a penalty.
Lloris, who has come in for criticism this season, guessed right and made a superb stop.
Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said on the eve of the game that his side would need to match the intensity of a City outfit oozing quality, both on the pitch and on a bench containing Kevin de Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane.
Tottenham worked their socks off to deny City time but after England forward Kane hobbled off just before the hour mark with a worrying-looking ankle injury, they appeared to be flagging.
City, for whom Sterling was a constant menace, were hunting an away goal but then Son, who has a knack of scoring goals for the team Guardiola once described as the "Harry Kane team" when their talisman has been sidelined, struck the decisive blow.
At first his control from Christian Eriksen's measured pass was sloppy, but Son retrieved the ball, then cut in from the byline and lashed a shot past Ederson, sparking delirium.

San Marino 0-2 Scotland: Alex McLeish’s men labour to win against lowly Euro 2020 qualifying group opponents

Scotland responded to their dreadful Euro 2020 qualifying defeat at Kazakhstan with a 2-0 win at lowly San Marino.

Alex McLeish’s men were dispatched 3-0 in Astana on Thursday, leading to Craig Burley telling talkSPORT that the manager should never have come back in the first place.

The result will do little to ease the pressure on McLeish

3

The result will do little to ease the pressure on McLeish

And while the latest match will do little to ease the pressure McLeish, Scotland did get the all-important result thanks to goals from Kenny McLean and Johnny Russell.

Many of the near 3,000 visiting fans therefore vented their disapproval towards the Scottish Football Association board, even after the second goal.

Skipper Andy Robertson admitted on the eve of the match that Scotland could only make a small start to atoning for Thursday’s loss but they barely did that.

Captain Robertson returned for the San Marino game

Captain Robertson returned for the San Marino game

The opening defeat looked even worse when Group I rivals Russia won 4-0 in Kazakhstan before kick-off in San Marino and ending the first two games against the two lowest-ranked teams on minus goal difference is a major setback, especially given Cyprus put five past San Marino.

The omens for a resounding win were not good. Scotland had only won 2-0 on each of their three visits to San Marino, twice on their way to reaching the European Championship finals in the 1990s.

McLeish made six changes and a bold choice in his central striking role in Cardiff’s Callum Paterson – a midfielder for his club and a right-back for his country in the November wins over Albania and Israel.

Paterson and Bournemouth wide player Ryan Fraser were back in after being allowed to miss the opening qualifier under an agreement with their clubs over concerns about the artificial surface, while Robertson returned after dental surgery.

Right-back Stephen O’Donnell also came in along with Russell and McLean, with James Forrest among the players dropped.

Scotland started with verve and McLean came close with a fierce 20-yard volley before glancing home Fraser’s cross and settling the nerves.

But there was no lift-off as the tempo gradually tailed off. Russell was twice off target with half-chances before teeing up Stuart Armstrong in the 20th minute but Ella Benedettini produced an impressive double stop.

Slackness remained evident in the visitors’ play and there was a scare on the half-hour mark when Jose Hirsch got in between Scotland’s centre-backs and went round Scott Bain, but he shot into the side netting from a difficult angle.

Paterson went off injured after landing awkwardly as he had a header theatrically saved and Marc McNulty eventually took his place.

There was a lack of quality about Scotland’s final ball, evidenced by Russell and Fraser wasting free-kicks and the latter crossing straight out of the park, before the half-time whistle was met by a few boos.

There was another scare just after the restart when Filippo Berardi went down in the box under the close attention of Scott McKenna but the referee was unimpressed.

McNulty had a shot deflected wide and McKenna glanced a header just past but Scotland were labouring and the introduction of Scott McTominay for Callum McGregor did little to change things.

Forrest replaced Armstrong in the 71st minute and soon set up Russell on the break to net from close range, with McNulty assisting matters by setting the Celtic winger free and leaving his low cross.

Russell’s 74th-minute strike sealed the win for Scotland

3

Russell’s 74th-minute strike sealed the win for Scotland

McNulty had good chances to add to the lead but headed Forrest’s cross wide from six yards and then saw his attempted lob diverted over.

The final whistle was met with a few jeers but more applause from the travelling fans.

The Frenchman’s future is a source of constant speculation – and many expect him to join Madrid this summer after he admitted the move would be a ‘dream’.

Bernabeu boss Zinedine Zidane is a known admirer of his compatriot, and according to Spanish outlet AS, Pogba has already agreed a £10million-a-year deal with the La Liga giants.

Nonetheless, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains adamant his star midfielder will stay at Old Trafford.

Speaking ahead of the Premier League clash with Chelsea on Sunday, the Norwegian said: “You can’t guarantee anything in football but yes, I think Paul is going to be here.

“I can assure you he is very determined to succeed at Manchester United.”

Pogba has been involved in more United goals than any other player this season and was the only non-Liverpool or Manchester City player to feature in the PFA Team of the Year.

But his form has been erratic – and many questioned whether he deserved his place in the PFA’s XI.

‘I’d love to see Frank Lampard replace Maurizio Sarri as Chelsea manager’, says former defender Glen Johnson

Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson expects Maurizio Sarri to lose his job this summer, and believes Frank Lampard would be a ‘great choice’ as the next Blues manager.

Sarri has been described as a ‘dead man walking’ as Chelsea boss, despite leading the club to a third place Premier League finish and to the Europa League final.

After a roller-coaster campaign there is a growing sense that, even if the Blues beat Arsenal to lift the trophy in Baku, the cigarette filter-chewing boss will be given the boot.

Maurizio Sarri ‘s job as manager of Chelsea is under threat

Sarri still has two years remaining on his contract in west London and has said he would be ‘very happy’ to stay at the club, although the 60-year-old has also admitted he is flattered to be linked with a move to Juventus.

But Johnson just can’t see Sarri keeping his job this summer.

“I do think the club have made their mind up already,” the former right-back to talkSPORT host Jim White.

“Sarri hasn’t done a bad job, I just think there are a few personalities that are clashing at Chelsea.

“If they win the final, you’d say it’s a positive season.

“But I don’t think it’s about the results, it’s just the way they’re getting the results.”

And he has backed former team-mate Lampard to return to Stamford Bridge as the Italian’s replacement.

The Blues legend has emerged as a surprise candidate for the role after a successful debut season in management, having taken Derby County to the Championship play-off final for a shot at Premier League football.

Lampard is now the bookmakers’ favourite and his appointment would no doubt be a popular one with supporters, many of whom are no fans of their current boss.

And even though he believes it has come too soon in his coaching career, Johnson wants the former midfielder to get the job.

“Could he do the job? Now might be slightly too early and I’m sure Lamps would probably agree with that, but I definitely think he’ll be capable of being successful as the Chelsea manager.

“I personally think it’s too early, but I could also see it happening. It’s exciting.

“I actually want him to get the job, I think he’d be great there.”

Johnson believes Lampard would be the perfect man to ‘get Chelsea back on its feet’ after a tumultuous season, which has seen the Sarri clash with senior players and the club hit with a transfer ban by UEFA.

“He is Mr Chelsea, he cares about the club and he would be interested in the youth teams and be the link between all the age groups and get the club back on its feet,” he added.

“As a person he’s a fantastic bloke and in the dressing room as a player he was brilliant, for me especially when I first signed for Chelsea. He was great.

“I remember on the first day in training I gave the ball away and somebody said to me: ‘Come on son, you’re not at West Ham now, you’ve got to liven up’.

“But Lamps was just like: ‘Just keep doing whatever you did to get yourself here’. That’s always stuck with me and that just shows you what sort of person he is.”
