Virgil van Dijk has transformed Liverpool’s defence

And he was a rock at the back as the Reds beat Tottenham 2-0 to secure a sixth Champions League trophy in Madrid on Saturday.

Van Dijk kept the returning Harry Kane quiet and made a last-ditch challenge to deny Heung-min Son in the second-half.

The Netherlands international has helped tighten up a Liverpool defence that used to leak goals.

Jurgen Klopp’s men had the best defensive record in the 2018/19 Premier League season, conceding just 22 times and keeping 21 clean sheets.

Speaking after Liverpool’s Champions League triumph, Van Dijk said: “I came out to Liverpool because look how passionate the fans are, real fans.

“They live and die for the club and even if we wouldn’t get the result they’ll still be here for us and that’s a good feeling.

“We grow as players and as human beings and as a group. We have a great togetherness.

“I am really proud to play with these players and for these fans.”

SOUTHAMPTON, United States (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted his side cannot meet the heights of Manchester City's football, but they may still deny Pep Guardiola's men the title after moving top of the Premier League by beating Southampton 3-1 on Friday (April 5).
Just like in their last two outings, Klopp's team needed late goals from Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson to move two points clear of City, who still have a game in hand.
"The performance was not top level but it is about fighting. People want us to play like Manchester City, we are unable to do that, we play our own football," said Klopp.
"We have 82 points now, that is massive in this crazy league and everyone is waiting for us. I am really proud. It is incredible."
Liverpool had to come from behind at St Mary's after Shane Long's ninth-minute opener, but they levelled before half-time thanks to Naby Keita's first goal for the club.
The visitors then dominated the second-half but had to wait until 10 minutes from time to go in front when Salah ran from inside his own half on the counter-attack from a Southampton corner to score his first goal for nine games.
Henderson started on the bench, but the Liverpool captain made a big impact with his first goal of the season to seal a vital three points.

"It is nice for Naby Keita to score the first to show Southampton it will not be easy for them. After that we controlled it more. It was good, I liked it," added Klopp.
"It is a difficult year for everybody. You need to have 70-75 points for the Champions League and 90-something for the the title. We are in the race and that is nice."
Liverpool appear to have the easier run-in from their five remaining fixtures compared to City's six, that includes a visit of Tottenham and trip to Manchester United.
But Henderson believes his side will need to win every game to end a 29-year wait to win the title.
"It was very big. Every game is massive. We've got to win every game," said the England midfielder.
"It was a big performance in the second-half and a big result."

Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool defender and PFA Player of the Year was destined to become world class, say former Groningen team-mates

Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool defender and PFA Player of the Year was destined to become world class, say former Groningen team-mates

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk’s excellent season has been recognised in his award for PFA Player of the Year.

His contributions at the back have helped take the Reds to within touching distance of the Premier League and into the Champions League semi-finals.

Van Dijk has made Liverpool defensively solid

An inclusion in the PFA Team of the Year was a given and now, he has beaten Raheem Sterling to win the individual award, becoming the third defender to do so in Premier League history.

Van Dijk, who moved to Liverpool for £75million in January 2018, has been widely credited with improving their defence, which this campaign has conceded just 20 goals in 35 matches and losing only once, as they contest a dramatic title race with Manchester City.

While Van Dijk has progressed into what many people are considering the world’s best defender over the past couple of years, the 6ft 4in centre-back actually began his career as a goal-getter in the Erdedivisie with Groningen.

â€Å“When Virgil first started playing for the first team he did so as a striker,” Finland international and former team-mate Tim Sparv, once on the books at Southampton, told Dream Team.

â€Å“He would come on for the last 15-20 minutes and cause havoc in the opponents’ box. He seemed so confident in his own ability, even though it was his first few games in the team and in a different position to what he was used to. That really impressed me.

â€Å“You could see that he handled himself well against more experienced players and didn’t look nervous or out of place, which is always a good sign in a younger player. You got a sense that he was destined for bigger arenas.”

The Holland international made his first team debut for Groningen, coming on for Petter Andersson during a 4–2 victory against ADO Den Haag in May 2011 and the latter says he was well aware of Van Dijk’s potential long before he made his professional debut.

5

â€Å“My first impression of Virgil was when I was injured and training with the second team. I had a good feeling about him from the start. He was very ambitious, humble and easy to talk to,” Andersson remembers.

â€Å“From the start he was big and solid on the ball, although he struggled a little bit when it came to his decision making.

â€Å“His speed, calmness on the ball and passing ability surprised me. This, together with his obvious physical superiority made him a very complete footballer.”

Van Dijk played 34 times in the league during his final season at Groningen, before completing a move to Scottish giants Celtic for £2.6million in June 2013.

There his reputation grew further as he won two league titles and the League Cup, eventually catching the eye of Southampton and in 2015, he got his first taste of Premier League football.

Three years later he became the world’s most expensive defender and his rise to the top has come as no great surprise to his former colleagues.

The Dutchman impressed his team-mates who knew he was destined for a bigger club

â€Å“I felt he had the potential to become a really good defender who would go on and play on the biggest stage, but his development has turned out to be even better than I could have imagine,” Sparv said.

â€Å“There’s no doubt that he had all the attributes to become a world class defender, but the truth is that I have played against so many major talents throughout my career and it’s very hard to figure out who will succeed at the very top,” Andersson added.

â€Å“I would say that what separates him and most of the best players is their mentality, and it’s hard to see that fully at first. His ability to focus, handle adversity, always learn and develop on and off the field is key.”

â€Å“I think that at some point along the way he understood what it would take to become a world class defender,” Sparv says.

Liverpool travel to the Nou Camp next Wednesday to take on Barcelona and the match is being billed as Lionel Messi vs Van Dijk and the latter will have to use his considerable physical advantages if he is to prevent the great man from running riot.

â€Å“During his first period at Groningen he wasn’t perhaps always aware of the amount of effort that you have to invest, on the pitch and in gym, to actually make it,” Sparv added. “I still remember that myself and a few others used to do extra sessions now and again with our physical coach.

â€Å“At first Virgil wasn’t a part of that group, but after a while even he joined in and did the extra stuff that is so important for a young player who is trying to make it in professional football.

Van Dijk’s first taste of the Premier League came with Southampton

5

Van Dijk’s first taste of the Premier League came with Southampton

â€Å“He has definitely matured along the way and as a captain myself I can really see how he’s developed his leadership skills during his career.

That was an aspect that didn̢۪t come naturally to him when he first started at Groningen.

â€Å“As a young player you are usually more focused on yourself, which is understandable, but it’s great to see how Virgil has developed into a human being that takes more responsibility for others.”

Roy Hodgson admits he is ‘powerless’ to stop Wilfried Zaha leaving Crystal Palace as Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund eye transfer

Roy Hodgson admits he is ‘powerless’ to stop Crystal Palace cashing in on Wilfried Zaha this summer.

Zaha, who has four years left on his Palace contract, cast doubt over his future last week by revealing his desire to play Champions League football.

Eagles manager Hodgson insists his talisman is happy at Selhurst Park, but concedes he would be unable to block a move should the club’s board receive a large transfer bid.

Roy Hodgson admitted he is powerless to stop Wilfried Zaha joining a bigger club

Roy Hodgson admitted he is powerless to stop Wilfried Zaha joining a bigger club

“I’m not ruling out the fact that something like that could come up when we sit down – it would be wrong to do that,” said Hodgson.

“The point is that no one at the club has really got any interest in selling Wilf Zaha, so we’re rather hoping that we won’t get those offers. But I’m realistic and it would be a club issue.

“If the bids don’t come to me any more, the bids come through the chairman himself (Steve Parish) or through (sporting director) Doug Freedman, if one day they call me in and say ‘Look, this is the situation’ – I shall be in their hands basically.

“I don’t have the power to veto any decisions of that nature.”

Zaha is Palace’s talisman and has attracted attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs

2

Zaha is Palace’s talisman and has attracted attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs

Zaha, in his second permanent spell at Selhurst Park following a short unsuccessful stint with Manchester United, has contributed nine league goals and three assists for Palace this term.

While former England boss Hodgson does not wish to see the Ivory Coast international depart south London, he believes it is important for footballers to be ambitious.

The 71-year-old wants all of his squad to aspire to play Champions League football and feels it is “not an impossible dream” for them to do it with Palace.

“I think if you’re in the Premier League and, at the moment, you find yourself sitting in 11th position, I’d like to think all of the players would be able to say they’d like to play in the Champions League,” said Hodgson.

“Maybe even with Crystal Palace because we’re a good way away from it but it’s not an impossible dream.

“And if you’re a good player in the Premier League you know there’s always going to be a lot of people looking at you, possibly coveting you.

“But the bottom line with Wilf is that he signed a long-term contract at the end of last season, he was well rewarded for that, he made it clear that his heart is with Crystal Palace and so we’ve got to make certain and hope that is the case and that we will keep him for the years to come.”

Can Sarri recover authority at Chelsea after Kepa incident?

LONDON (AFP) - Kepa Arrizabalaga's extraordinary refusal to be substituted by Maurizio Sarri in Sunday's (Feb 24) League Cup final heaps the pressure on the beleaguered Chelsea boss as he desperately seeks consistency.
The Spaniard twice required treatment late in extra-time against Manchester City at Wembley, with the match heading for penalties, so the Italian boss planned for his substitution.
Willy Caballero, who saved three penalties for City in their 2016 League Cup final win, was readied to go on, but Kepa declined to leave the pitch - sparking confusion and angering Sarri.
Even after the bizarre incident, the world's most expensive goalkeeper had the chance to be a hero.
He saved Leroy Sane's penalty in the shootout, but could have done better with Sergio Aguero's effort that slipped under his body as Pep Guardiola's side retained the trophy with a 4-3 shootout win after a goalless draw.
Victory at Wembley might have bought Sarri time, particularly coming so soon after a 6-0 humbling by the same opponents in the Premier League.
But instead the 60-year-old Italian, who is yet to win a trophy in his managerial career, must prepare his players to host high-flying Tottenham in the Premier League on Wednesday, knowing he cannot afford to slip further behind the top four.

Sarri, Kepa and David Luiz, the closest player to Kepa throughout the incident, were "on message" after the match at Wembley, all insisting it was a misunderstanding, not insubordination.
"The coach has the power over the group. He has our respect," Luiz said. "For me, there is not a problem here for that. We all believe in his philosophy, we all believe in the way he wants us to play."
But former Chelsea skipper John Terry said the former Napoli coach was in a difficult situation, with the incident coming after weeks of speculation over his future and concerns over his style of play, dubbed "Sarri-ball".
"It leaves Sarri in a tough place," he told Sky Sports. "I'm surprised he didn't force him to come off." Ex-Chelsea striker Chris Sutton described the scenes as "mutiny at Chelsea".
"Kepa should be sacked, not Sarri," he told BBC radio. "He's been undermined - it's the worst thing that can happen to a manager."

Player power

Under International Football Association Board rules "if a player who is to be replaced refuses to leave, play continues" and it is not the first time it has happened.
In the Premier League in April 2017, while at Swansea, Lukasz Fabianski was injured in the 81st minute, declined a change in the 86th minute and conceded three goals afterwards as a 1-0 lead turned into a 3-1 loss to Tottenham.
Chelsea's history suggests players hold significant influence at Stamford Bridge. The hire-and-fire policy of owner Roman Abramovich means managers have a limited shelf life and players have previously exploited the policy.
This is not the same group as the one that defied Andre Villas-Boas or masterminded a Champions League win under Roberto Di Matteo, when the senior players were said to be more influential than the interim manager.
But the incident suggested there could be a leadership vacuum at Stamford Bridge.
Sarri replaced Antonio Conte in July and got off to a flying start, with Chelsea unbeaten for the first 18 competitive games.
But recent results have included the 6-0 mauling at City, a 4-0 loss at Bournemouth and a 2-0 defeat by Manchester United in the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge.
After the Spurs game, Chelsea have a run of what appear to be winnable fixtures before away matches against Liverpool and Manchester United in April.
But the question is whether Sarri still has authority in the dressing room and whether he will be given the time to turn things around.

Damir Skomina to referee Tottenham vs Liverpool Champions League final

Damir Skomina to referee Tottenham vs Liverpool Champions League final

Damir Skomina has been appointed referee for next month’s Tottenham vs Liverpool Champions League final.

It will be Skomina’s fifth European Cup match this season, having overseen two group stages matches – including Liverpool’s defeat of Napoli – and two in the round of 16.

Damir Skomina will be the man in the middle when the two Premier League sides meet in Madrid next month

His most recent fixture was Manchester United’s incredible 3-1 win in Paris that knocked PSG out of the Champions League. Skomina awarded the Red Devils a late penalty after a VAR review which Marcus Rashford scored to complete United’s comeback victory.

The 42-year-old had also previously refereed United’s Europa League final win over Ajax in 2017, as well as Chelsea’s 4-1 defeat by Atletico Madrid in the 2012 Super Cup.

He was the first referee to send off an England goalkeeper when he showed Robert Green a red card in a 1-0 defeat in Ukraine in 2009.

He has previously officiated a Tottenham match three times, while Liverpool have had Skomina as their appointed referee on five occasions.

And their record with the Slovenian involved is remarkably poor, with the aforementioned defeat of Napoli this season their first ever win.

The Reds lost each of their first four matches which Skomina officiated, starting back in 2009/10.

They were defeated by Fiorentina in the Champions League group stage that season, then lost Europa League ties to Besiktas and Villarreal in 2014/15 and 2015/16 respectively.

Last season Skomina was in charge when Roma beat Liverpool 4-2 in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final, though the Reds progressed to the final on aggregate.

Spurs have never won a game in which Skomina has been the appointed referee, though they’ve also only been defeated once (vs Internazionale) with him in charge.

Skomina will be assisted by his countrymen Jure Praprotnik and Robert Vukan, while the fourth official will be Antonio Mateu Lahoz from Spain.

The final takes place in Madrid on Saturday, June 1.
