Toby Alderweireld believes Tottenham’s display against Liverpool proves they can compete with the very best sides in Europe.
Spurs were beaten by title-chasing Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield at the end of March, however, the visitors had many chances to win it before Alderweireld’s own goal earned the Reds three valuable points.
And despite the result, the defender is confident they can cause problems when they take on Manchester City in the Champions League.
Speaking ahead of the first leg on Tuesday at Spurs’ new stadium, Alderweireld said: “I’m confident, especially how we played in the game with Liverpool. It gives us belief.
“In one of the toughest games away, we showed we can play well, defend and create chances to kill the match.

Belgian Alderweireld will go up against international team-mates Kevin De Bruyne and Vincent Kompany in what is arguably the pick of the last eight ties.
Alderweireld added:Â “I know Kevin and Vinny very well of course and they have a lot of quality. I wish them the best, but we want to win.
“City just play very well, I can’t say too much about them because everyone knows how good they are, with the squad they have.
“They have a lot of quality, but on our day we can beat any team. We have to be top on top of our game to get a result, but we are going to do our best.
