Manchester United news: Alexis Sanchez reveals he supported Red Devils as a child and is determined to succeed at Old Trafford

Alexis Sanchez has revealed he was a Manchester United fan as a youngster and is determined to make supporters happy.

The Chile international became the highest paid Premier League player when United signed him in January 2018 as part of a swap deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move to Arsenal.

His basic salary is reported to be around £350,000-a-week, but it is alleged to rise as high as £500,000 with bonuses and image rights.

The 30-year-old has not been a success at Old Trafford and failed to replicate the form he showed for the Gunners.

In slightly over 12 months he has scored just five goals in 41 appearances.

He also picked up a knee injury in United’s game with Southampton a couple of weeks ago and is likely to be out for another month.

Sanchez has been linked with a move away from the Red Devils but he remains committed to the team he supported as a young boy.

“I want to keep showing my love for football. I know what I can do. I have belief in my ability,” he told Inside United.

“United are such an important club, not only in England but on a global level, and I would love to help bring a trophy to the supporters.

“Obviously, I want to make the United fans really happy. I want to score goals. I want to bring them joy. I want to win silverware.

Tottenham Hotspur right-back Kieran Trippier is being coveted by both Manchester United and Napoli, according to reports.

The England star’s career in north London is hanging in the balance after a poor season following his World Cup heroics.

Trippier, 28, has been the weak link in Mauricio Pochettino’s side this campaign with an own goal against Chelsea and a missed penalty against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup just two of his worst moments, while injuries have also harmed his form.

This hasn’t deterred his suitors, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, though with Man United keen to add to their ranks at full-back with Antonio Valencia leaving this summer and Diogo Dalot still only 20 years old.

DUBAI • Australia's Jamie Maclaren believes he is ready for more goals after scoring for the first time for his country in the 3-0 Asian Cup win over Palestine in Dubai yesterday.
"It's been a long time coming. I've stayed on my path and kept working. I know I'm a goal-scorer. It was going to come one way or another," the striker, who made his 10th appearance for the Socceroos, said on Fox Sports.
Defending champions Australia recovered from their shock 1-0 opener defeat by Jordan and moved within sight of the last 16.
Goals from Maclaren, Awer Mabil and Apostolos Giannou put the much-improved Socceroos second in Group B with one game to go.
The Aussies will now go into Tuesday's final group game against Syria with renewed confidence, while the Jordanians are already through to the last 16 after beating Syria 2-0 on Thursday.
Australia coach Graham Arnold dropped the under-performing Massimo Luongo and Robbie Kruse in favour of Jackson Irvine and Chris Ikonomidis, who impressed as substitutes against Jordan.
It was a far more dynamic team that opened their account on 18 minutes, when Tom Rogic picked out Maclaren who scored with a glancing header.
Two minutes later, gold-clad Australia were 2-0 up as Ikonomidis lofted a ball to the far post where Mabil sneaked in unmarked for a first-time finish.
Substitute Giannou then nodded in a deserving third for the Socceroos in the final minute.
"Many people say I can't head the ball and today I showed them," Maclaren added.
"We knew what we had to do today, win the game. Straight from the start we scored two early goals and that really settles us."
The win undoubtedly pleased Arnold, who was always confident that his players would bounce back from a defeat he considered an anomaly.
The result leaves Australia poised to take second place in the group, barring a defeat by Syria.
With Jordan now on six points, Australia can no longer top the group as head-to-head record is used to rank teams on level points.
Even with a loss to Syria, Australia could still qualify for the round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams.
In Group C, China beat the Philippines 3-0 through goals from Wu Lei (two) and Yu Dabao to go top of the group on six points.

Tottenham marked the opening of their new stadium with a much-needed 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Heung-min Son made history by becoming the first player to score at the breathtaking arena, before Christian Eriksen made sure Spurs kept their place in the top four and ended their five-match winless streak.

While fireworks preceded the game during a stunning opening ceremony, the first-half failed to live up to the occasion and Palace frustrated the hosts.

But Son, returning to the starting XI, settled any nerves with his left-footed strike from the edge of the box in the 55th minute.

And Spurs fans, who have been encouraged to stay for up to two hours after the full-time whistle, were able to relax when Eriksen doubled the lead in front of the magnificent, steep South Stand.

The result sees Tottenham leapfrog bitter north London rivals Arsenal into third, although the Gunners have a game in hand.

It has been a long and painful wait to get back home for Spurs – 689 days since they last played at White Hart Lane – but on a memorable evening in front of just over 59,000 fans every one of those 51 trips to Wembley for a ‘home’ game will have been worth it.

Spurs’ players could not have failed to be inspired by the pre-match festivities, but despite an early corner, Palace showed they had clearly not read the script and should have taken a third-minute lead.

Jeffrey Schlupp got on the wrong side of Kieran Trippier and burst through on goal, but lacked composure and blazed over.

The hosts, buoyed by exuberant fans, began to take control and the chances soon racked up, with a number of players wasting the opportunity of a place in the history books.

Eriksen perhaps had the best of them early on but he failed to connect properly with his shot from Trippier’s pull back and Vicente Guaita had an easy save.

Harry Kane’s goalbound free-kick was only stopped from going in by a late block in the wall while Son’s shot squirmed through Guaita’s hands but went wide.

Danny Rose should have been the man to score the first goal but after being played through by Son he opted to pass to Kane when the only option was to shoot.

Michy Batshuayi fired an early warning in the second half that Palace were a threat on the break as he shot just wide from the edge of the area as the nervous tension began to rise.

But that was all alleviated in the 55th minute as Son earned himself a place in the annals of time by giving his side the lead – if the dubious goals panel do not get involved.

Palace gave the ball away to Eriksen in a dangerous area, he passed to Son and the South Korean cut inside and saw his shot take a heavy deflection off Luka Milivojevic and into the net.

It would be cruel if Son was robbed of this piece of folklore, but the Premier League might want to check if his shot was going in.

Spurs could have given themselves breathing space 10 minutes later but Kane, desperate to get on the scoresheet, produced an uncharacteristic miss when through one-on-one.

Eventually the game was put to bed in the 80th minute and it was another scrappy goal.

Kane burst into the box, thought he was fouled, but Eriksen was on hand to sweep home from close range.

Spurs were able to enjoy their night of revelry, but they know they will have to be better next time they play here next week – when Manchester City are the visitors in the Champions League.

Norwich’s open-top bus broke down and stalled their promotion parade on Monday, forcing them to find a replacement.

The Canaries will be playing Premier League football next season after winning the Championship title on Sunday.

The club were due to parade through the city on a personalised yellow bus with the words ‘We are Premier League’ on it.

But it became unusable and they switched to a red sightseeing tourist bus.

During the parade, Norwich boss Daniel Farke, who fought back tears, said: “I have no words.

Tottenham news: Martin Jol reveals he secretly sold Porsche 911 given to him by Daniel Levy

Former Tottenham manager Martin Jol has admitted he sold a Porsche 911 months after receiving it as a gift from chairman Daniel Levy.

Jol, who was in charge of Spurs between 2004 and 2007, was given the car after guiding Spurs to the Europa League at the end of the 2006/07 season.

However, the Dutchman also claimed he was promised a BMW by Levy and his vice-chairman Paul Kemsley if he got Spurs in Europe at the end of the season before, which he managed by getting them into the old UEFA Cup, which is now the Europa League.

Eventually, Jol did get his new wheels but it turned out he actually had the exact same Porsche, so he had to sell it on the sly.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Jol said: “Daniel and his vice-chairman Paul Kemsley were obsessed with the Champions League.

“Paul told me ‘if you play in Europe, I will give you a BMW’, so when we were in the UEFA Cup I was waiting for it and I think I got a watch from his driver instead. It was a nice watch, but I gave it to my nephew and I never asked about the BMW.

“Paul never turned up with the BMW, but maybe a year later when we qualified for Europe again, Daniel gave me a Porsche 911. That was nice, but the thing was I already had the same Porsche, so secretly I sold it a couple of months later.

“It didn’t come with any of the papers, so I had to make an excuse to ask for them so I could sell it!”

Spurs take on Dutch side Ajax, a team Jol managed in the 2009/10 season, for a place in the Champions League final with the first leg of the semi-final tie in north London on Tuesday.

Current boss Mauricio Pochettino has brought Champions League football to Spurs for the last three seasons – a feat Jol couldn’t quite manage.

But Spurs came exceptionally close in 2005/06 when they began the final weekend in fourth spot, but local rivals Arsenal snatched it away from them following their win over Wigan and Spurs’ damaging loss at West Ham.

However, Spurs’ defeat at Upton Park wasn’t without controversy as a number of their players were struck with a bout of food poisoning on the morning of the game.

They lost 2-1 and their Champions League hopes went up in smoke but Jol refused to fully blame the dodgy lasagne the players received on their defeat.

Jol added: “On the morning of the game, at 4.30am, the doctor phoned me and said ‘we’ve got a problem, the players are ill’.

“It was obvious something went off. People were going to the doctor and all sorts, it was very strange, but I don’t want to blame anything like that.

“It was never easy to go to West Ham, so I don’t want to look for an excuse.

“I can remember Michael Carrick was ill and he still played, but it’s too long ago to worry about. We were the best of the rest at the time and that was good.”
